The Release of the AncientCritters will be in late February with a first run of 33 DIY pieces, handcasted and numbered by the artist. Differents colorways and some surprises will follow till then, stay tuned!
Now it’s time to share some secret WIP shots of our new fellas. Last week our studio turned into a greenhouse and the first AncientCritters resin casts were used for planting series of experiments. I’m petty sure the AncientCritters will bring the best out of you and a green touch for your desk & toy collection! ^_^

You can see on this short slideshow the silicone molding process of AncientCritter ALTRO. I have placed the the prototype and the seem line in a slightly strange position for this two part mold but I had the feeling I should give my silicone-plug-system-technique™ a shot
Now after the first few resin copies i have to say, casting is going pretty well so far …and I’ve got some wicked ideas for these fresh Resin Critters right now! Stay tuned.

Designer and Architect Mathias Bax from Germany has created his first DIY Resin Toy the Ham-ster Cavy. I’m pretty shure the Ham-ster will become a nice plattform to realise lots of awsome custom jobs. The Ham-ster’s comes in two versions one with movable arms and one with fixed arms (for kids;). A piece will cost approximately 10$ plus shipping costs.
So get your hands on your own DIY Ham-ster straight from his creator and place an order at bax.architekten@arcor.de. He will handling production and shipping by himself. The first cute fellas will find their new owners right now in January 2010.

After reconstructing the “Ancient Critter No1″ information from a tiny bio-harddisk we were finally able to revive a first specimen of it! For the time beeing it’s growing fast and we feed it with fern and other ancients herbs. But see for yourself!
More about these long time died out “Ancient Critters” next week…

Happy New Year from smallstuffstudio to all!
The year is pretty young, but i have so much new stuff to show you!
First of all, the last few PEARBLOCK Angels will find a new home today at my grandparents and grandaunt’s shelfs. They where a great joy to give away as Christmas presents. So i have one last left (no. 01/16) and i will sell him here on the smallstuff page for you in a few days! Stay tuned if u want to grab this unique handcrafted 2.5 inch Wooden Designer Toy py pepe for your own collection.
Now to the fresh stuff: Ancient Critter #1 – Keep your eyes open, long gone species will revive 2010! Check the data-sheets I found deep burried in a secret vault of this ancient little fella… Strange things will come! Be warned!
…
Just played with a nice Google tool: Google Insights for Search
Here You can see the stats of the keyword “designer toys”.
Very interesting are these peaks every year before Christmas…
Next year, I think i have to plan the timing for my releases better

Ok i’m late as usual
…so i’ve worked today on my small series of XMAS PEARBLOCKS.
I droped the arms because they where to small for my taste, i’m fine with
only the two wings on the back of the body.
All the pieces are now finished with semigloss varnish. Still have to
assemble them and have to find a nice giftpackage solution…no idea
about this, very simple i think. For iron branding it will be too late
…grrr no time. (and srry for the blurry mobilepics i’ll update you
with better pic’s of this series PEARBLOCKS when Christmas is over)

Lost yesterday my complete WordPress database with all my pages,
posts and comments
I was really downhearted about my work on
the code, css and template i’ve done so far for this page the last half year…
Now today the Support of my Web-Host was my year 2009 hero!
The Support answered to my ticket after two minutes, they had a Backup
of my Database and even repaired a damaged file for me without charging anything for it.
This is what a client-support should be!
..now smallstuff.ch is up and running again!!! jepeee!
thnx METANET

Last month I had so much work to do in the model building studio and nighttimes i was more on the painting-some-stuff-wave. Finally I’m ready again to work on my Toys and I’m really enjoying it to work with wood. It’s such a wonderfull material and it offers so many ways to cut, drill, mill and carving some nice toys out of it.
For the time beeing I’m working on a first small series of my PEARBLOCK Wooden Designer Toy. Have some ideas for these first 15 pieces. I want to spend them two angel wings out of bright wood (maybe maple), but I’m not shure if it fits well…any suggestions? I planed to give most of them away as Chrismas presents. Check the WIP pictures of the process so far…well, still lot to do till x-mas! …and if you be in luck, maybe Santa won’t give away all of them and you can get even one of these guys in my shop, stay tuned

VOTE HERE! thx
SQUIMONK – my second entry for the Aarting DIY Toy Challenge.
Today is the deadline for the DIY Contest at aarting.com. I really want to participate with an another toy design than my “monopear”. But to realize with 3D modeling what I’ve got in my head, time was to short to learn all the stuff so quickly. Now then, I’ve done my second entry the old-fashioned-way: sculpting, sanding, molding, casting in resin, again sanding and finishing with white primer (well i guess, not really less time-consuming…
) The prototype stands only a 3/4 inch high, so i would love to see them much bigger as an Aarting DIY Toy ready for you to customize!
This afternoon I’ve grabbed my cam and finally hunted some blank SQUIMONKS in the wild …check the picture series.
SQUIMONKS lives high up in the threes and rarely come to ground to pick up the jummy fir cones. That’s the reason why they have a slightly beer-belly, they know very well how to do really tasty fir cone beer in their brewery
Please vote on aarting.com for the SQUIMONK!

I’m a huge fan of brass, it’s really easy to work with it and it’s perfect for my next small experiment: branding my wooden toy hordes!
I used the CNC milling cutter to get me some small brass stamps with my name engraved (first attempt was a miss, because i forgot to mirror inverted the letters…urgh
). With a soldering iron and some patience with the sightly goatish PEARBLOCK guys, i got the result I’m looking for!
Check also the pictures with the new fellow, i call him the PEAR DEER. I gave him a nice and shiny semi gloss finish, hope you like him…

Last week i spoted on aarting.com a D.I.Y Designer Toy Contest. Check the submission guidelines, download the templates and design your own toy. This is your chance to design the toy’s actual shape. That’s right, designers from all over the world will be able to customize something that you designed! This means that you’re now free to come up with any original shape you want, in any style. The deadline for the toy entries is the 30. Sept 2009.
If you don’t want to participate yourself, please just register shortly over arting.com and vote for my designs, i would really appreciate it!

The little Wodden PEARBLOCK is made out of pear and oak wood finished and coated with natural linseed oil
Today was fun, had to work during the morning at the model workshop. I was really bleary-eyed from last nights page template customizing, so on the side of lazy working i made me a quick wooden toy. Had no sketches for this little guy, it was just cutting and sanding into the blue. The design has only two joints for the arms, so it’s kind of simple and not rich detailed, just a rough protoype … kind of like him and want to define some details a bit more (proportions, face, painting) …and maybe i’ll try out some silly ideas (how about to drill him the whole head away… hey, just a thougt

I’ve made tonight a new grunge and rough splattered wp-theme. i will stay with something like this for a while till i’ve got all the background images and a solid color concept for this page. And I’ve to learn a bit more how to manipulate the css and php to my needs…
